The Spiritual Richness Of San Miguel, Mexico

San Miguel, Mexico, which is more formally known as San Miguel de Allende, is the ideal setting for those looking for a spiritual retreat.  The area is stunningly beautiful, which allows for getting in touch with nature, and also offers a number of spiritual and cultural sites that allow for strengthening spiritual connections.

Located in the mountainous area of eastern Guanajuato, San Miguel is located 7,000 feet above see level.  Nonetheless, it is a relatively flat area that is surrounded by tall, majestic mountains.  In addition to its physical beauty, San Miguel also

has a remarkable climate.

For those looking to reconnect with their spirituality, the architecture and many spiritual sites make San Miguel the ideal retreat.  In fact, the town was actually founded in 1542 by a monk by the name of Fray Juan de San Miguel.  Despite its initial growth, the town was in danger of becoming a ghost town in 1900 until it was declared a national historic monument by the Mexican government in 1926.

After being declared a national historic monument, steps were taken to preserve the colonial character of the town.  One of the most revered sites in San Miguel is the main Parroguia church of San Miguel, which was beautifully restored in the 20th century.

During the 20th century, a large amount of money was donated to the area by the Lopez Escobedo brothers and sisters.  This money went primarily toward developing schools for girls as well as convents for nuns, many of which still exist today.  An art school by the name of Escuela Universitaria de Bellas Artes was also established in 1938 by Felipe Cossio del Pomar, making it the first in San Miguel.

By the 1950s, San Miguel became well known for its amazing colonial architecture combined with its soothing thermal springs.  In fact, following World War II, it became a major tourist attraction among US citizens and many GIs attended the art schools in the area that were US accredited.

Although some new developments have taken place in San Miguel, the are is still largely made of historic sites and buildings.  A supermarket and a major shopping mall are both recent additions that allow residents and those using the area as a retreat to still enjoy modern conveniences while basking in the glory of this magnificent area.  With so much to offer, it should come as no surprise that so many people flock to this area for a spiritual retreat and to reconnect with themselves and with nature.
