What Is A Spiritual Retreat?

It's been said that before rehabilitation programs were in existence, people were still able to recover from alcoholism or other forms of obsessive compulsive behaviors. The difficulty with treatment as it is most commonly given today is in its' attitude. Most programs generally offered believe that a person can never become completely well. Quite simply there theory is that if you haven't drunk for thirty years after indulging yourself heavily for ten, you're still an alcoholic. In the past, this way of thinking wasn't accepted. It's difficult for treatment to work effectively if the addict goes into it with the idea that they will never recover. It's not to say that these forms of treatment are useless, on the contrary, what it is implying is that the attitude needs a more optimistic view.

People like Dr. Carl Jung saw the weakness in these ideals and developed thoughts of his own. One such thought was that an addict can completely recover through the aid of a vital spiritual experience. This similar thought process is what has helped in making spiritual retreat centers take form. Accompanied with a twelve step program, inner bonding, coping, and meditating techniques they have proven to be very successful.

One thing you will find in common with many of the top recovery centers is their physical environment. Most have a unique gift of natural beauty geared to provide a serene and relaxing atmosphere. Activities are often encouraged in the outdoors.

Meditation is also something that is actively mentioned in each. Yoga is one form of meditation that is often encouraged. This may be due to the fact that yoga is a joining of one's mind and body. This emphasis helps develop the inner bond needed for an addict to fully recover.

Informative programs are also offered. Often they are in the form of seminars. These are utilized for educational, motivational, and inspirational purposes. Many retreat centers also have individual support systems with specialists incorporated into the mental, emotional, and spiritual sects of addiction recovery.

It's been mentioned in the past that addiction develops from an emotional or spiritual void. The combination of activities that these spiritual retreats provide allows you to become familiar with your own vacancies and find a more rewarding way of filling them.

One thing that spiritual retreats don't do for you that many other treatment programs tend to do is formulate your recovery for you. At times, a person is forced into a rehabilitative program and in many of these cases, treatment fails. Spiritual retreats cannot fail because only you have the power over your recovery.
