800px-freundinnen.jpgAs a parent, you want only the best for your children – this includes keeping them drug free and healthy. Unfortunately, many parents are not certain how to help keep their children off of drugs. As a result, they stand by helplessly and simply hope their children will make the right decisions.

If you want to make certain your children stay away from drugs, you need to take a more proactive approach. The single most important step you can take is to initiate a conversation about drugs with your children. Don’t simply talk to them about the dangers of drugs one time. Giving them a speech about drugs one time isn’t going to sink in. In addition, this does not form a relationship with your children that makes them feel comfortable talking to you about drugs.

The reality is that your children will face pressure to do drugs from their friends. If you have initiated a conversation about drugs with your children, they will feel comfortable talking to you about these experiences and getting advice. They will also feel as if there is support at home that will help get them through the pressure they are facing.

Of course, you also need to lead by example. If you preach about the dangers of drugs to your children and then smoke or drink on a regular basis, they are going to be less likely to hear your message. Therefore, it is important that you lead a clean life. If you have had past experiences with drugs, talk to your kids about these experiences and how they affected you. In this way, they can learn from your mistakes rather than having to make them on their own.
