women and addictionMost women become addicted to drugs and alcohol for very different reasons than that of men. Women tend to give so much of themselves to children, spouses, family, and friends that they lose themselves in the process. Without a solid sense of purpose – a feeling that you have a unique place in this world, it can be easy to succumb to the addiction of alcohol or drugs.

Most women who kick their habits and are now living sober lives do so by making major life changes like returning to school, switching to a job that is more in line with their core beliefs, or becoming active in community organizations they are passionate about.

In other words, they discover something about themselves that makes them happy and focus more energy on developing themselves.

But in order to make this change, you must first know what it is that you are passionate about. Because many women have spent so much time catering to the needs of others, they don’t often know what it is they are passionate about.

We can try to set aside time for ourselves while still living in our regular schedule, but when we can’t have even an afternoon to ourselves between kids and phone calls, and work responsibilities, finding our center tends to become a task that is brushed aside indefinitely.

This is exactly why we created the Open Door Recovery as a women’s only retreat designed to help women discover themselves. In our opinion, taking the time necessary to rediscover oneself is among the most critical steps of the drug or alcohol recovery process.

How will you rediscover yourself?

If you’re serious about recovery, you must commit the time necessary to get centered. To remember or to find what your core beliefs and desires are and create a plan to live a life more in tune with those beliefs and desires. Do not wait. Look on your calendar and find time today that you can remove yourself from your everyday environment without interruption or stress. You owe this to yourself!
