Womens Addiction Recovery: Being Impeccable With Your Word
Oct 4th, 2007 by admin
Many of the teachings and activities of our womens retreats are designed to bring you more into balance with the wisdom of Don Miguel Ruiz’s book “The Four Agreements.” Over the next several posts, we’ll explore these Four Agreements in detail and how they relate to addiction recovery.
Agreement 1
Be impeccable with your word - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
One of the most critical actions we can take during the addiction recovery process, is to learn how to be true to ourselves. The alcoholic or addict leads a double life – the true self which knows that addiction is destroying them, and the addict which will manipulate to get what it wants.
After leading a double life for so long, we learn to become comfortable with lying to ourselves and to others. Feeling ashamed of ourselves, we tend to ridicule and gossip about others in a poor attempt to elevate ourselves.
When we begin to speak with integrity, we become accountable for our actions. We are either living in accordance to our beliefs, or we are not. If we are not, we must speak the truth about ourselves without hiding behind lies or excuses.
Even if we’ve once felt the tranquility of being true to our word, it is possible to slowly slip back into behavior patters on mediocrity. The Open Door womens recovery retreat is designed to reinvigorate our sense of self so that we may more easily live in harmony with the 12 Steps and the 4 Agreements.
