Having a healthy sense of self esteem is a critical part of leading a joyful life and finding strength in recovery. For some of us, managing a healthy self esteem is more difficult than for others. No matter, everyone experiences periods where they need a self esteem boost.
Here are 5 things you can do to build your self esteem and feel great:
Go for a brisk walk
Getting your blood flowing with a bit of light exercise can have and dramatic impact on attitude and self esteem. Set a destination, or explore new areas and let your mind wander as you walk briskly. Allow your mind to escape the daily stresses and just focus on the sights, smells, and sounds around you while enjoying the feeling of being alive.
Help someone in need
There are so many wonderful programs in the community such as Meals on Wheels, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more that you can participate in. This gets your mind off of whatever it is that is causing your self esteem to dwindle while making an incredible difference in the lives of others.
Rediscover a new talent or past time
What activities did you once enjoy that you no longer pursue? Whether it was painting, singing, tennis, or playing a musical instrument, make a plan of action to get involved in a favorite activity that made you feel empowered in the past.
Write a bio about yourself
Assume for a moment that you’ve just been recognized for a great achievement and a top magazine has just asked for your bio. Write a bio about yourself highlighting all of the accomplishments that have led to this great achievement. Keep it handy – you never know when you might need it!
Plan a trip
It’s important to have something to look forward to. When we just float through the stream of life without a destination, we can begin to lose ourselves and with it, self esteem. Pick a place to visit, set a time, and start planning.
