Womens Addiction Recovery: Refusing the Victim Role
Oct 5th, 2007 by admin
Many of the teachings and activities of our womens retreats are designed to bring you more into balance with the wisdom of Don Miguel Ruiz’s book “The Four Agreements.” Over the next several posts, we’ll explore these Four Agreements in detail and how they relate to addiction recovery.
Agreement 2
Don’t take anything personally - Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
The addict tends to believe that the entire world is plotting against him or her rather than accepting that we are part of a universe that continues to change. When we can’t control the world around us, we often turn inward and attempt to control our bodies and remove the pain by drowning it in drugs or alcohol.
When we begin to accept the beauty, mystery, and power of a world in constant flux and our place in it, we no longer feel the need to control those around us. We understand that there is no reason to feel threatened by the opinions and beliefs of others because we have strength in our own selves. We stop taking things personally and learn to create our own reality – a reality that is strong and impenetrable.
