courage to change your addictionNo matter the addiction you are in recovery from, whether it is alcohol, drugs, food, or co-dependency, the risk of slipping into relapse skyrockets during the stressful holiday season.

Our normal system of avoiding relapse may not be enough to handle the extreme stress and heightened emotions that tend to surface during the string of end of year holidays.

About this image: The Chinese characters represent the concept that it requires courage to change. “It takes great courage and inner strength to change from what is known and comfortable to something which is new and fresh. That which is unknown often contains our greatest potential. To seek our potential by risking change is the path of true greatness. Such action brings great favor and untold blessings.” This image is courtesy of Haiku Designs where this print can be purchased.

Here are four ways that you can remain centered and avoid an addiction relapse:

Have clear and rehearsed answers planned before you go out to socialize

For example, if you are in recovery from alcohol, you’ll know exactly what to say when someone at a social event ask you if you’d like a drink or asks why you’re not drinking – don’t be caught off-guard.

Schedule regular get-togethers with people who share your intentions

Though it is often our first instinct, it is important that we do not isolate ourselves during these stressful times. If you are overcoming a co-dependent relationship, be sure to have lots of events planned with friends – even if you think you don’t feel like going. If you’re in recovery from drugs or alcohol, plan events and get-togethers with others in your recovery group or with those that socialize without drugs or alcohol.

Commit to reading 1-2 self-empowering books each month

Go online or to the bookstore now and stock up on selection of books to read during this time period. Be vigilant about reading 1-2 (or even more) books per month. Reading a little each night can have a tremendous impact on helping you to stay focused on your goals.
